New RCBI machining, welding classes begin in January

Individuals looking to start their career journeys or train for jobs in the in-demand fields of machining and welding don’t have to wait until fall 2023 to get started. The Robert C. Byrd Institute (RCBI)’s nationally recognized Machinist Technology/CNC and Welding Technology programs, offered in partnership with Mountwest Community & Technical College, are enrolling new students for classes that begin in January in the Huntington area.

Students earn industry credentials, one- and two-year certificates and can complete an associate degree of applied science in as little as 18 months. Many students of RCBI’s programs graduate debt free – or nearly free – because of scholarships and grants, including the West Virginia Invests program, that cover tuition and fees.

“Perhaps the biggest selling point for our programs is that the overwhelming majority of our students find jobs in their chosen occupations, many even before they graduate,” said Carol Howerton, RCBI senior strategic advisor for workforce development. “Because manufacturers across the region consistently turn to RCBI for workforce solutions, we know what jobs are available in these fields and can connect our students to these rewarding opportunities.”

In addition to hands-on use of manual and computerized equipment and machines, all RCBI students learn industrial safety practices and blueprint reading. Machinist students also learn computer-aided design and precision measurement, while welding students also study metallurgy.
